“The Specter of Democracy” : King, Tocqueville, and the Im/Possibility of Democracy in America

This essay develops the concept of the specter of democracy in thinking through the (un)conscious fantasies and desires for national and theoretical wholeness that are, nevertheless, interrupted by the very im/possibility of democracy in America. Using Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech in conversation with Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America , I initiate a specific trajectory in disaggregating dominant tropes and themes in the discourse on democracy in America. In so doing, I recover a dreamscape as a critical site for analyzing the theoretical limits of the explanatory and normative frameworks of the American democratic project, thus revealing the not-so-clean divides between the ideal and the reality of democracy in America.Cet article a pour objet le spectre de la démocratie, une élaboration conceptuelle étudiée ici en résonance avec l’idée de complétude, nationale et théorique, et des fantasmes et désirs (inconscients sous-jacents, auquels contreviennent cependant l ’im/possibilité même de démocratie en Amérique. Placés en regard, le discours de Martin Luther King, Jr., «I Have a Dream », et La démocratie en Amérique de Tocqueville sont la base d’un examen critique spécifique qui désagrège progressivement les principaux tropes et thèmes du discours sur la démocratie en Amérique. Ce faisant, c’est toute une fantasmatique qui est soumise à l’analyse, un nouvel espace critique qui expose les limites théoriques du projet démocratique américain, et du cadre normatif sur lequel il s'appuie. Dès lors, distinguer à propos de la démocratie en Amérique ce qui procède de l’idéalité ou de la réalité se révèle plus complexe qu’il n’y paraît.Walker Corey D.
