This essay develops the concept of the specter of democracy in thinking through the (un)conscious fantasies and desires for national and theoretical wholeness that are, nevertheless, interrupted by the very im/possibility of democracy in America. Using Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech in conversation with Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America , I initiate a specific trajectory in disaggregating dominant tropes and themes in the discourse on democracy in America. In so doing, I recover a dreamscape as a critical site for analyzing the theoretical limits of the explanatory and normative frameworks of the American democratic project, thus revealing the not-so-clean divides between the ideal and the reality of democracy ...
